SAND RIVER GETAWAY

Autumn Planting

We have cleared a space in fynbos to start a big veggie garden. The earth here is made up of clay and rock so we have decided to use raised beds and luckily there is a place we can get old wooden boxes from just down the road. And since we run a vegetarian market stall we have lots of compost to fill up the boxes.

What the land looked like before clearing

Our workaways, Duart and Walter clearing space for the garden

It’s the season to plant peas and beans so we made some trellises for their little tendrils to cling to and grow up to create shade for the veg growing underneath as it still gets up to 35 degrees celcius in Autumn. In the first bed we planted greenfeast peas, sweet peas and orange, purple and yellow carrots.

Our Market Stall

We have a little market stall at the Valley Market selling some fun and experimental vegetarian food for the people looking for something a bit different and healthy.

Amy started the stall at Oranjezight market and Tyisa Nabanya in Cape Town before running off to Namibia with Duart. We moved back to Sand River Getaway and have started it up again in PE our home town. We are building the garden so that we can have a little restaurant right in among the vegetables that will be on your plate.

Surfing Wedge

One of the cool things about living just outside Port Elizabeth is that we really get the best of so many different worlds. We live in the fynbos, can have dinner in the bay, climb mountains in the Baviaans, surf perfect waves in Plettenberg Bay and shower under waterfalls in Nature’s Valley all within a short road trip’s distance away.

Duart is a pretty damn good bodyboarder and Plett has a great Wedge for that so we took a trip with our friends and had a great weekend.
